Formed in 2011, London-based collective Fofoulah recently followed up 2014’s impressive self-titled debut with their sizzling sophomore album Daega Rek. While still centred on Gambian frontman Kaw Secka’s shamanic vocals and propulsive sabar drumming, production by Red Snapper’s Tom Challenger (also on sax and keyboards) deepens and thickens the mix to take in glitchy electronica, deep dub beats, muscular Afro-rock, bravura improvisation and mesmeric dance grooves. Also in the live line-up are Senegalese vocalist/dancer Batch Gueye, Robert Plant drummer Dave Smith, guitarist Phil Stevenson and bassist Johnny Brierly.
“Hip-hop dances with wild West African trance, jazz trips with electro lightning-strikes in a sweeping embrace of different cultures.” (Louder Than War).
